LANI RAMSEY is a spinner of fibres- and a weaver - who takes texture, colour and elements to make ‘one of a kind’ creations. Her free style weaving has allowed a freedom of creativity and meditative joy

Spinning of fibres

Many things can be spun - animal hair- plants- the circular movement of a spinning wheel, drop spindle, charkha or an e-spinner, creates a mesmerizing process. One with no words, just movement. Like the Universe rocking you into creating. The capture of fibre and removal of air, the continuous process of joining long strands of these materials to create a stringed structure- yarn- single, double, triple- then taken on to other processes…………….pure magic.

Freestyle weaving

2 shaft loom, Saori a Japanese brand, allows for a meditative style of weaving. Rather than focus on patterns that are complicated (multi shaft looms) one can begin weaving, understanding the quiet, contemplative moving of the two pedals, the opening and closing of the shed, where one can focus on colour, texture, as the warp engulfs the weft. Felted Vessels

This one made with wool-but many other types of fibres can be used and create happy felts. Add in dyed rovings, sparkles, silk or other- it shrinks down into a unique shape of the creator. Rubbed over a piece of plastic (called a ‘resist’), that will not felt onto the piece, then cut out and continue to felt (a process of soap and hot/cold water) causes the protein fibres to shrink down over themselves. Voila a vessel or perhaps slippers? A flat piece to create clothing……….. endless possibilities.

Knitting

Using two sticks and some string- one can create endless possibilities. Sometimes a pattern is used, or started, but then freestyle wins over. Like going off script, the fun begins. My mind can rest and enjoy the process, colour and texture take over once again. A fabric is created- one to wrap yourself in the Universal creative love that engulfs us all.
